You are stupid. Froggy muttered, for the first time. At once, he apologised, blushing. He had not meant to offend Meritaten. She might run away and leave him again. He fancied her and wished he could somehow amaze her, bind her to him. Unsure how to achieve that, he tried impressing her with his knowledge…
Meritaten flinched a little. Why was he doing that to her? Each time, he hurt her unexpectedly, in one way or another. Chatting with Lama started to resemble playing with a poisonous snake. You never knew when it might bite you. Was it still worth wasting time on him? Yet, he kept her fascinated. She also felt lonely and misunderstood deep within. That similarity could have been the thing that attracted them magnetically to each other. Like two outsiders at a dumping site behind the city…
This time, it was Lama who broke the strange silence, full of tension. I could show you how to find water with a dowsing rod. Would you like that?
Well, why not? The curious girl was immediately intrigued. But I have just made this little fire. Shall I put it out?
Wait a moment. We can return here shortly, Lama said, grabbing Meritaten by the arm. Surprised, she did not even protest. The guards may be watching over them from a distance. They would certainly prevent anything bad from happening, as back then with the handsome Michanitta…
The skinny, tall Froggy now led her somewhere. His cool palm was fairly clammy. But, actually, it felt pleasant. He wanted to be with her. At least someone longed for her company… Dad had no time for her anymore. Her nanny had been charged with additional duties too and they saw each other only in the mornings during breakfast, before Meritaten left for school.
Lama’s face had nice features. He turned his head to her, smiling. As if he suspected she had been watching him.
