Justice With Portia

This is a sample from Chapter 3 (Justice With Portia), Part 2 (The School) of Sona Siepakova’s novel Loved By The Sun

In Part 1 (The Garden), the main character, Meritaton, a pharaoh’s daughter, spends most of her time in the vast garden behind her palace. She is going to build a shamanic circle, try to call in the rain, speak with the Earth, see a pyramid with her father… In Part 2 (The School), Meritaton goes to a spiritual, mystery school where students learn techniques of personal and spiritual growth to gracefully pass their final test of courage…

Riad remained silent, as if he only knew the word by hearsay and didn’t understand the exact meaning. In my homeland, we see women as servants. The men rule over them, beating them with sticks if they were to disobey. A man may hit a woman with his palm or fist, depending on how much she resists doing what he has asked her to do.

Yes, Riad. And then?

Then what?

Well, what consequences is it going to have for your soul when you follow the traditions of your region, when you subject women to obedience, translating it even to your relationship with the planet itself?

I would be mighty! Riad laughed. Everybody would follow my commands and I might do as I please.

And what are you unable to do now, pray tell, that you are so longing for such freedom?

Riad did not have an answer.

Meritaton blurted out. Everyone desires freedom!

And Portia added. And everyone wishes to have a good life, to rise above poverty and mere survival. People want harmonious, pleasant relationships, lots of money… But basically, they wish to have the opportunity to express themselves freely and to be lovingly accepted for who they are. Many wish to actively contribute to the formation of their society, taking on leadership roles or by sharing their opinions publicly. Others just watch from a distance, focusing on their family or perhaps smaller crafts. Yet, every single person yearns to be loved and accepted as they are with all of their dreams and desires…

Well, what have I done to deserve such lecturing?

Portia smiled with understanding whilst Freya zealously took the floor. Heatedly, like a northern goddess, she explained that women deserve liberty as well as the planet. Their dreams must also be respected. And the same applies to the right to life and love for everything else that is alive. Neither trees nor animals are able to defend themselves with success. And many are incapable of protecting themselves when harmed by humans. Even the tiniest bug or little plant is of importance! Unless we have healthy air, thanks to the plants, we will die! Without animals, for example, the bees, the plant kingdom would no longer be able to function. And we would die too! When we manipulate the weather, disregarding the plant and animal kingdom, we damage the whole planet! Your boasting is short-sighted! Do you fancy soon dying, Riad? What is the good of your fame when many will then hate you for having caused their death?

Sit down, dear ones. Go to your places, everyone and get your boards ready to take notes. Portia commanded.

None of us are angry with Riad for his concept of justice because he has not yet learnt a different way.
